Fire Near Sedona: A Travel Reminder During Arizona Fire Season

We took our chances and made the drive up to Sedona yesterday, but it turned into a good reminder that travel plans in Arizona can change quickly during fire season.

Our original route took us up through Flagstaff first for lunch, but because of the fire near Oak Creek Canyon, Highway 89A from Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon was closed. That meant we had to head back down to I-17 to get to our hotel in Sedona.

By the next morning, the smoke was definitely visible in Sedona. You could see it hanging in the air, and you could smell it too. It was not overwhelming at the time, but the smoke odor was noticeable enough that anyone planning to hike, walk around, or spend a lot of time outdoors would want to think twice, especially if they have asthma, breathing issues, or are sensitive to smoke.

Sedona, Flagstaff, and Oak Creek Canyon are absolutely beautiful places to visit, but sometimes the best travel decision is knowing when to save a destination for another time. If you were planning a trip up this weekend, our advice would be to check conditions carefully before you go and consider choosing another place if smoke, road closures, or fire activity could impact your plans.

It is also worth remembering that this is fire season in Arizona. There is also fire activity near Payson and Christopher Creek, so it is a good idea to check your route, destination, road closures, weather, and air quality the night before you travel — and again the day of your trip.

Arizona is full of beautiful places, but conditions can change fast. With winds expected to pick up, it may not be worth spending your money and travel time just to see smoke and smell smoke.

Our advice: save Sedona, Flagstaff, and Oak Creek Canyon for another time when you can truly enjoy the views, the trails, and the fresh mountain air.

Stay safe, check before you go, and always have a backup plan during Arizona fire season.
