Sometimes Arizona surprises you.
Most people picture Tucson as cactus, desert heat, and endless sunshine—but just a short drive from downtown, Mount Lemmon completely changes the landscape and reminds you how unique Southern Arizona really is.
Vince & Ji headed up the scenic Catalina Highway toward Mount Lemmon and stopped at one of Tucson’s most breathtaking viewpoints:
🌄 Windy Vista Point 🌄
And honestly?
It’s one of those places that instantly makes you stop, look around, and appreciate how incredible Arizona can be.
Windy Vista Point: One of Arizona’s Best Scenic Stops
Located about two-thirds of the way up Mount Lemmon, Windy Vista Point offers panoramic views, dramatic rock formations, and endless mountain scenery overlooking Tucson below.
It’s one of the most popular lookout areas on the mountain—and once you see it in person, it’s easy to understand why.
During their stop, Vince & Ji watched experienced rock climbers scaling one of the massive granite formations rising above the overlook.
For Vince, it was the first time ever seeing someone climb that particular rock formation in person.
And honestly?
It was pretty amazing to watch.
People were standing near the edges of the cliffs, taking photos, soaking in the views, and enjoying one of Arizona’s most scenic mountain drives.
The Scenic Drive to Mount Lemmon
Part of what makes Mount Lemmon special is the drive itself.
As you climb higher along the Catalina Highway, the landscape transforms dramatically:
🌵 Desert cactus forests
🌲 Pine trees
⛰️ Rocky overlooks
❄️ Cooler mountain temperatures
Within about 30–40 minutes from downtown Tucson and the University of Arizona campus, you suddenly feel like you’ve entered a completely different state.
That’s one of the reasons locals love Tucson:
You truly experience four seasons here.
Summerhaven & Ski Valley: Tucson’s Hidden Mountain Escape
Earlier in the day, Vince & Ji visited:
🏔 Summerhaven
🎿 Mount Lemmon Ski Valley
Many first-time visitors are surprised to learn Tucson even has a ski area.
Summerhaven itself is a tiny mountain village tucked high in the Catalina Mountains. Vince described it as “a really small little teeny-tiny place,” but that’s part of the charm.
Compared to the Tucson Vince remembers from living there in the 1990s, the area has grown slightly with a couple of hotels and more visitors—but it still maintains that quiet mountain-town feel.
Why Mount Lemmon Makes Tucson Special
According to Vince & Ji, if you’re visiting Tucson for the first time, there are two places you absolutely cannot miss:
✔ Mount Lemmon
✔ Sabino Canyon
The combination of desert scenery, mountain forests, hiking trails, wildlife, and scenic overlooks makes Tucson one of the most underrated outdoor destinations in Arizona.
And the best part?
You can experience both relaxing sightseeing and outdoor adventure depending on your comfort level.
Next Stop: Sabino Canyon 🌵🚋
The adventure continues tomorrow with a trip to Sabino Canyon, another iconic Tucson destination.
Vince highly recommends taking the Sabino Canyon tram:
- Ride to the top
- Hop on and off at scenic areas
- Explore walking trails
- Or simply relax and enjoy the views
For visitors who don’t want intense hiking, the tram still lets you experience the beauty of the canyon comfortably.
Final Thoughts
For Vince & Ji, Windy Vista Point was one of those simple but unforgettable travel moments:
- Fresh mountain air
- Stunning desert views
- Watching rock climbers
- Scenic drives
- Exploring Arizona together
It’s a reminder that some of the best adventures don’t require airports or luxury resorts.
Sometimes all you need is:
🚗 A road trip
🌄 A beautiful view
❤️ Good company
📸 And a sense of adventure
And that’s exactly what “What’s Next Nana & Papa?” is all about.
